The Airshipventures Blog has been called Up Ship! ever since. But now they also have a real UP-ship with the new envelope branding that was revealed today. It is featuring the word UP (the title of Disney Pixar's new animated movie) on each side of the envelope with the floating house of the main character of the movie and the company names Disney and PIXAR at the stern of the ship and the words "Only in Theaters" underneath the giant UP. Just the word UP is 78ft across and in total there are over 700 decal sheets with approximately 5000 sqft of decal material. It took four people four days to apply the branding which is provided by the team from Airborne Grafix in Germany who have been designing and producing the brandings of many campaigns of the Zeppelin NT worldwide. The decals will be off by the end of June so hurry to snap a picture of the new branding and send it to Airship Ventures. I find the branding absolutely stunning and a great example of how airship advertising can be, it's really one of a kind. It's the first advertising contract of the Zeppelin NT in the US but I am sure after seeing how impressive the airship is there will be many to follow. Remember the airship will be flying down to L.A. so you will have a chance to catch it there too.
But Airshipventures is not the only Lighter-Than-Air business that is contracted to promote the movie. Jonathan Trappe from ClusterBalloon.com is doing a North America tour with two armchairs that are lifted up with balloons, just like the house in the movie. One chair tours the west coast the other the east coast. Go to the Clusterballoon.com Website for a schedule and to volunteer to help out when they are in your area. Today and tomorrow May 8th the west coast tour is in San Francisco, would be fun to see a picture of both the cluster balloon and the airship. Thanks to Dan Nachbar for the tip on the cluster balloon event.

Airship Ventures gets new cash
On Feb 21st. SFGate.com ran an article called "Fresh cash windfall for zeppelin" about Airship Ventures the San Francisco company that recently purchased a Zeppelin NT and brought it to the US. The article describes the current situation of Airship Ventures and how the economic downturn affected them. According to the article they got another round of investments to keep the company aloft and operating. But even though times are difficult, the article mentions that Airship Ventures will soon crack the 1,500 passengers mark and has 800 more booked flights. That's a total of 2300 passengers with a lowest ticket price of 495$ the minimum revenue that Airship Ventures will have made is 2300 x 495$ = 1,138,500$ If you remember that the airship arrived in October that is only 5 months of flying in the winter, to me that is quite the accomplishment. Congratulations and best wishes to Airship Ventures, that the passenger numbers will increase as the weather gets warmer and that the birthing pains will soon be history.

Win a ride on the Airship Ventures Zeppelin
You are reading right, Mark/Space the company that develops the "Missing Sync" synchronization software for mobile devices is currently at the Macworld Expo that is going on till Friday January 9th and they are doing a drawing of a ride on the Airship Ventures Zeppelin every day. So you got two more chances to win a ride. Of course you would have to be at the Macworld Expo and stop by their booth in the South Hall, booth # 2044. The mock up of the Zeppelin in the picture is really just a mock up but it's pretty if you ask me. So good luck to everyone who happens to be at the Macworld Expo these days and congratulations to the winners.

Since i have been very busy every since mid September a lot of news Items have slipped through the radar, some of them a old news now but I would like to post them just so that people who are looking for it later in time will be able to find them. One of those now old news items is the Press Release by Zeppelin about the Zeppelin NT #4 being loaded onto the dock ship at the Airbus station at the Port of Hamburg. Along with the press release was the picture you can see in this post that I thought was really nice showing the airship being loaded.
Now here the Pressrelease from September 27th 2008 in English and German
Airship Ventures Zeppelin to Cross Atlantic to the U.S.
PRESS RELEASE Airship Ventures Zeppelin to Cross Atlantic to the U.S. World’s largest airship to be transported on ocean carrier to its new home Hamburg, September, 27th 2008 – The largest airship in the world, the 246foot-long Airship Ventures Zeppelin will soon be traveling onboard a craft even larger than herself. One of only three Zeppelins in the world, the airship departed from the secondlargest port in Europe for a voyage to her new home in the United States. The airship was loaded at the Airbus station at the Port of Hamburg, Germany, onto a 530 foot-long multipurpose/semisubmersible ro/ro ship, managed by Combi Lift/Denmark, and fixed by Condock Befrachtungs-Gesellschaft/Hamburg, part of the Harren&Partner Group, the MV “Combi Dock I.” After securing the Zeppelin to the ships deck the engines and empennages were removed for the voyage cross the Atlantic. As the Zeppelin is formed with a semi-rigid structure inside its hull, it cannot be ‘deflated’ for transportation like a blimp. After departing the Finkenwerder terminal in Hamburg, the ship will travel 5,200 miles to the Port of Beaumont, Texas. After reassembly and airworthiness testing, the airship will fly overland to her new home base at Moffett Field/NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California. A marvel of modern airship design, the Zeppelin NT (“New Technology”) is manufactured in Germany by Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH. Powerful engines, state-of-the-art avionics, and fly-by-wire flight controls enable the airship to perform maneuvers similar to those performed by helicopters, including vertical takeoffs and landings. At 246 feet in length, Zeppelin NT is 15 feet longer than a Boeing 747, and dwarfs the largest blimp currently flying in the U.S. by more than 50 feet. Moffett Field -based Airship Ventures owns and will operate this Zeppelin offering the only airship passenger flight service in the United States. The Airship Ventures Zeppelin will be permanently based in the Bay Area, offering itineraries showcasing the San Francisco and Silicon Valley landscapes, Sonoma/Napa wine regions, and the Monterey/Big Sur coastline. The Zeppelin NT#4 is in Cardington
We had mentioned in one of our previous posts that the Zeppelin will be in Cardington before starting on it's cruise to the Netherlands. This is the first time since 1930 that a Zeppelin visits Cardington according to John Christopher from Zeppelintours. The Zeppelin arrived safely from London on August 21st at 17:38 according to Alexandra Hall from Airship Ventures
The Zeppelin is scheduled to leave Cardington on Wednesday. There was a press presentation scheduled on Tuesday according to Arnold Nayler, donät know if it happened.
As soon as the Zeppelin arrived in Cardington it was brought into the hangar and the Stella Artois branding was removed and replaced. Who is the new sponsor? We don't know but maybe this picture and this one allow for some speculation. The Zeppelin will fly from Cardington to the Netherlands and will then be transported with a Ship called Combi Dock 1 to North America. To read more about the Ship go to the Combi-Lift website check out the 3D presentation it's quite impressive. The ship will probably leave from Rotterdam or somewhere close to Rotterdam, since this is where the Zeppelin will be flying to in the next week. The question then remains were will the Zeppelin arrive in the US. According to Ryan Myers from "The Beaumont Enterprise", the Zeppelin will arrive at the Port of Beaumont around September 26th will then fly from the port to Southeast Texas Regional Airport, stay there for about 3 days before flying to San Francisco. This information is not confirmed by Airshipventures so pure speculation and rumor at this time. Here are the two articles that Ryan Myers wrote: Article 1 and Article 2
And last but not least Alex Hall from Airshipventures was interviewed on NHPRs Word of Mouth on August 4th. You can listen to the interview by going to the website and downloading the MP3 file of the radio show. Fast forward to Minute 25:30 where the whole 10 Minute interview starts.

The Zeppelin will come to the Netherlands

- The Zeppelin Cruise page of Zeppelintours, John Christopher's non stop shop for flights with the Zeppelin. You can book directly through them.
- Zeppelinvlucht.nl - the homepage of Aerwin about the Zeppelin Flights, unfortunately in dutch, so jump to the auto translated English version here
- Zeppelin Europe Tours with additional background information and a map of the tour.
Read this document on Scribd: Zeppelin Europe Tours Aerwin Tour 2008
If you can't quite afford the 6500€(incl tax, hotels, meals, transfers) for the cruise the Cruise the next stop of the Zeppelin might be more for you. The Zeppelin will fly from Rotterdam until September 8th 2008 and offer round trips similar to those offered in London. Similar to London there is a number of different options available to fit every pocket. Starting with flight of 35 minutes for € 270,- going to 60 minutes flights for € 450,- and topping of with a 90 minutes flight for € 675,-. To find out more about the flights check Aerwins Homepage(in dutch) or have a look at the Zeppelintours Website for contact information and some pictures of last years flights. The flights over Rotterdam are a continuation of flights that were done last year in the Netherlands, some might remember our post and the unique branding of the Zeppelin with the highway number "N470" all this is of course the lead up to the great day when the Zeppelin NT is finally shipped to the US we reported earlier this year about this. I personally believe that the Zeppelin will be shipped from Rotterdam but this is just speculation on my side. It's good to see the Zeppelin NT #4 continuing the success story of it's older brothers and we wish Airship Ventures only the best for their operation in the US starting this fall.

Great 8 Minutes video of the Zeppelin over London - [Updated: and another 3 minutes]
I just found a great great Video of the Zeppelin flying over London on YouTube. It has been online for just a few hours and has only been watched 19 times as of the time I write this. So whats so great and why is it a must watch for every Zeppelin Fan. Well because it is 8 Minutes long, the longest video till now that I have seen of the London flights. It starts out with the Zeppelin showing once again it's unsurpassed ground handling qualities. Following lot of scenes from within the Zeppelin so you can see everything in great detail and you get to experience the introduction that the copilot does when the airship lifts of. Finishing with some nice shots of London and the Zeppelin lifting off with for the next flight. Watch it, rate it, comment on it. It's worth it. And can inspire even more people to want to fly in Airships.

The Zeppelin NT #4 on its way to London
As you might know the new Zeppelin NT #4 is supposed to start flights over London this Thrusday July 10th 2008. Unfortunately the weather god doesn't seem to like the Zeppelin. If you check the Star Over London all status lights are currently red. On Friday morning the Zeppelin left Friedrichshafen on it's way to London. The original plan was to be in London beginning of this week. Currently the Zeppelin is more or less stranded in Bonn (Germany) because of bad weather. The team from Airship Ventures is traveling with the Zeppelin on it's way to London and while they have to wait for better weather they are blogging keeping us all updated. Here is what they wrote today in a post called Ground Hog Day:
Ground Crew, Pilots and Mechanics were all at breakfast this morning for our now 'regular' 9am meeting. This is like 'Ground Hog Day' said Fritz. Ah, I said, I guess that means we're stuck in Bonn for another day.Have a look at their latest updates on their blog Up Ship!. They have published a whole lot of stuff in the last few days some even dating back a bit. To make it easier for you to find it. Here are the links to their latest posts, featuring bits from the transit flight, pictures and other gems. (newest first)
The weather is pretty awful for the next few days, not here in Bonn where the sun is shining, but in the English Channel. A low pressure is sitting over the UK at present causing very high winds from the SW whistling through the channel.
The Bad News is that it looks to be that way for at least the next couple of days, and then another front sweeps in.
Someone was asking Fritz yesterday ' but can't this airship travel in 30-40 knot winds?' Yes, it can. But if you fly at 45 knots into a 35 knot headwind, then you'll be going very slowly and burning a great deal of fuel!
- Ground Hog Day
- Cold Beer Shower
- Friendly faces at Bonn.
- Nuclear I assume
- Fast Ship
- Crop Canvas (2)
- Put a plant in front of it.

William Thomas about Airship on Coast to Coast AM
William Thomas a Canadian investigative journalist was on Coast to Coast AM the beginning of this month and spoke about airships. Coast to Coast AM is a syndicated radio talk show in the United States. Read the Wikipedia article for more background information on Coast to Coast AM. The radio show can be listened to again via these two youtube playlists: Informations given in the show are nothing really new, a few false claims for example that the Zeppelin NT can carry 21 People instead of 12 but that might have been just a number mixup. The most interesting part is when Robert Rist from Dynalifter gets a chance to talk about the project, stating the the project is alive and that they are working on the prototype. So it seems the project is not dead yet eventhough their first prototype got so serverely damaged.
William Thomas also wrote a number of articles that are available from his website, I have just skimmed them but they might be worth a read as he covers a broad spectrum of general Airship Information, overviews about the companies currently in business and looks at the future possibilities of airships for passenger travel and their impact on climate change. He covers the Zeppelin NT from Zeppelin Luftschiff Technik (ZLT), Airship Ventures, the Voyager Airship of 21st Century Airships, the Dynalifter of Ohio Airships and Worldwide Aeros with their Aeroscraft. Here are his articles:

The Zeppelin NT - ground handling almost perfect
Originally I just wanted to publish this video of the brand new Zeppelin NT Number 4 with the Airship Ventures design on it but then I found a video of the Zeppelin NT #3 landing and thought I would just share with you some general ground handling and landing videos of the Zeppelin NT. It amazes me again and again how few people the airship requires for ground handling. The vectored propellers on the sides and the tail make the Zeppelin NT really the most maneuverable manned airship in the world. But enough said on to the videos. The first video shows the brand new Zeppelin NT #4 being taken out of the hangar, on the front the mast truck on the back just one member of the ground crew steering the tail of the airship.
The next video is an approach by the Zeppelin, it's turning into the wind and then lands, the ground crew of just three men then put the stairs onto the airship to allow passengers to exit. A completely different experience than that on the Goodyear Blimps with their big ground crew.
The last video shows a landing and takeoff by the Zeppelin NT #3 the highlight in this video is again the hovering ability of the Zeppelin and the calm slow aproach for landing and the easy take off.

Zeppelin issues Press Release on First Flight
Zeppelin just issued the following Press Release in English and German about todays successful flight
PRESSINFORMATION First flight of new Zeppelin airship completed Airship to enter commercial service in June, head for US in September Friedrichshafen, Germany and Moffett Field, California , May 21st, 2008 – Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH & Co. KG and Airship Ventures today announced the successful first flight of the fourth, and latest, Zeppelin NT airship over Friedrichshafen, Germany. Construction of the fourth Zeppelin NT airship having recently been completed, the ship was handed over to the flight test department to begin the testing phase. The hangar doors opened and the airship left the 360 foot long hangar for the first time since the start of airframe assembly in March 2007. Robert Gritzbach, Zeppelin VP of engineering, commented: “After the prototype being the third ship in our series production, we were able to incorporate a number of design improvements – reducing weight while increasing lift and achieving a near doubling of airframe lifetime – that make this our finest ship to date!” A proud and long awaited moment for all involved, it is a special moment when a new airship exits the hangar for the first time. Alex Hall, Airship Ventures CEO, remarked “What an incredible process we have witnessed over this past year – the assembly of the frame, fitting out of the gondola, helium being put into the envelope, the first start up of the engines, and now the maiden flight.” The engines having been started one by one, the airship was released from the mast truck, and right away started for the sky. Taking off nearly vertically, the ship proceeded to the calm air over Lake Constance to head right into her initial flight tests. The first pilot to fly the airship, Fritz Günther, Zeppelin Flight Operations Manager and the first pilot to fly the new airship said “This is the 3 rd Zeppelin for which I have been part of the maiden flight, and feeling of pride in knowing all our hard work has resulted in success never diminishes. As a pilot, I look forward to confirming the new performance characteristics.” In the meantime, two pilots of Airship Ventures have arrived in Germany and are training with their new ship. Starting it’s long journey, on one side the airship carries the logo of the local brewery Leibinger, partner with Zeppelin group offering special “Zeppelin Beer”. On the other side, the Airship Ventures logo and “Going Places” branding evokes images of flightseeing trips to come – iconic locations of California including San Francisco, Lake Tahoe, Napa Valley, Moffett Field, Treasure Island, Hollywood and Yosemite. Last week, Airship Ventures had announced successful completion of an $8 million Series A Preferred Stock financing, which has allowed the company to finalize preparations for commencement of operations in the US this fall. ABOUT ZEPPELIN LUFTSCHIFFTECHNIK GMBH & CO. KG Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik GmbH & Co. KG, headquartered in historic Friedrichshafen, Germany, develops, manufactures and markets the Zeppelin NT, a modern lighter than air multi-purpose airship.
